The city was named after Mary Cobb, the wife of U.S. Senator Thomas Willis Cobb. It became an important transportation hub due to its location on several railroads and highways. During World War II, it was also known as a military manufacturing center due to its proximity to Fort Benning and Camp Blanding.

Logan and Jehu Curtis as the Rural Normal School of Georgia, later renamed the Southern Normal School of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts. The school's name changed to what it is today after it became accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
